What a pleasure it was to see madness performed so sanely by NYC performance artist M (Mem Nahadr) and her bevy of Paris soulsinging sisters: Sandra Nkaké , Lisa Spada and Rachel Claudio .* Despite the holiday weekend imposed by French labor day (May 1) a very sizable crowd turned out through word of mouth online on a relatively unknown singer in France. In the US, she has a cult following having accompanied Julie Andrews, Liza Minelli and Chaka Kahn to name a few. After this performance Mem is sure not to pass unnoticed in Paris for long.

Sandra MC'd the show which started with improvised scatting supported by a full band. Early on Mem and Sandra's improvisational skills were in perfect harmony, holding the audience's attention despite a few sound board glitches. Each singer sang solo on classic soul/jazz tropes of Love and desire with little effort. Mem sang two songs from here Contemporary opera Madwoman putting basic lyrics on acceptance and frustation of lost love, jobs and being in Paris surrounded by a stage full of talent. The two songs were enough to leave the audience hungry for more, but alas it was not to be after a 2.5 hour show.

em has received a spattering of praise from respectable press who have jumped on her bandwagon. Her soul-bearing at six octaves illustrates she could be ready for venues to fully stage her Madwoman opera soon enough. Her avowed insanity was just the opposite, a fully sane moment of communication from the heart and soul of a striking blond dreaded talent ready to go global.

Mem will be performing May 16 in France followed by several show in the Netherlands and the east coast of the United States.

All About Jazz
review of "Earth People"

M is an ululating torch poet whose tone shifts between lamentation and triumph with vocals seductive, defiant, visceral, at times overwhelmed by the music, but as formidable as any instrument in the band.

At one point on the title cut of "Simple ... Isn't It??, the latest CD by Earth People, M, the band's enigmatically-named singer, purrs "Would you like ... the usual? I didn't think so!" That contempt for the mundane exemplifies this vibrant work of spiritually driven, boundary-busting, cadre music. Their debut CD, "Waking the Living" (also on CD Baby.com), covered some of the same ground but with a slightly larger ensemble. On "Simple" their roster is four members less, the music no less potent.

Opening with "Birthright", M's scream of vocalease is a sound of being forced out into the world, recalling the opening words of Thomas Pynchon's "Gravity's Rainbow" : "A screaming comes across the sky ....".

De Vokskrant, National Newspaper, Netherlands

"Liesbeth List does very good in the show, real good indeed – but that she was almost completely blown away by the blind black/white albino singer M, from New York, introduced by Director Matthew Dickens is apparent. With her gigantic range of six octaves and a beautifully brilliant jazzy-blues voice, she brings back the Harlem Pre-War Experience to Holland."

-Patrick van den Hazenberg De Volkskrant , The Netherlands

"...Well I don't want to sound aggressive or angry but I've had it up to here with folks making bucks in music who have no ears to hear. We've had our backs to the wall so long we wrote a song and found a key. M sings everthing and perfectly at all times (although she has some strange ways about her.) All the best Musicians in New York know her and there is -- what should I say? -- a high level of respect, reverence, even awe for her talent. Sabir Mateen, saxophone legend, calls her simply "The Great One." Fuck You if you don't think M is "Marketable." Two years and she could float your whole fucking record company.

People love her when they hear her and you're scared of her power. You want to keep the power, you whiny weasels in your Shiny offices and salaried positions. You like to eat musicians, you keep a couple dead ones in Saran Wrap in your freezer and have "bacon" late at night with your powerful friends. If you are a chump dumped in loserdom you'll just try to drag the world down with you into Hell. If you are interested in music, or the expression of soul, you will be working to try and help more people find out about M. "-Gary Heidt, New York Museum of Sound Recording

With this CD, M steps assuredly into the pantheon of the greats - Sarah, Billie, Mahalia, Chaka - bringing her powerfully rich voice to bear upon her lyrically complex compositions. That she offers breathtaking renditions of the standards "Don't Explain" and "Come Rain or Shine" in this collection serves to show how she expertly, reverently mines the past as she carves out rich, new musical territory of her own. Just listen to the haunting "Anymore" and you will be seduced and pulled deeply into the world of a woman who's passionate life resonates in every note she releases. Her voice, the songs, her lyrics, the stories she paints will leave you spellbound and have you returning again and again to listen, learn, feel and be transported.

If you thought M's first CD was awesome, you'll think this one is Da Bomb. Mysterious Madam Madwoman M has done it again. The pieces range from earthy, to industrial, to pieces that take you to the stratosphere. Speaking of stratosphere, M's vocal range seems to go from soprano to contralto. My God, woman, is there no end to your talent? Each of these masterpieces (mistrisspieces?) carries us along in M's journey of self-discovery. Of course this journey ends in triumph. “I don't care anymore, I'm Not afraid.” You go, girl.

Mystical, Magical and Magnificent. M's craft is wonderfully life affirming!!

good groove and sweet sound. The part with drums\vocals\guitar was really catchy in it's simplicity. The slap-bass was cool,   A really deep and funky bass-line in the loud parties makes the song really groovey
